Tenerife North vs South: Which Side Should You Choose?

One of the first decisions when planning a Tenerife trip is simple but important: north or south? The two sides of the island offer very different experiences, and choosing the right one will shape your whole holiday.
The south: sun, beaches and resorts
Weather
The south is the driest and sunniest part of Tenerife. Clear skies are the norm almost all year, which is why the main resorts developed here.
Vibe
Purpose-built resort towns like Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos offer hotels, restaurants, bars and beaches within easy walking distance. It is busy, convenient and great for a classic sun-and-sea holiday.
Highlights
- Golden beaches such as El Duque and Fañabé.
- Whale watching trips from Puerto Colón.
- Water parks, nightlife and family entertainment.
- The dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes.
Best for
Families who want everything close by, beach lovers and anyone guaranteed sun.
The north: green, authentic and cultural
Weather
The north is greener and a little more humid, with occasional cloud — which is exactly why it is so lush. It is still warm year round, but expect more variety than the south.
Vibe
The north feels more local and authentic. Puerto de la Cruz has character and history, while the countryside and mountains are dotted with traditional villages.
Highlights
- The UNESCO colonial city of La Laguna.
- The lush Anaga laurel forest.
- Loro Parque, one of the best animal parks in the world.
- Black-sand beaches like Playa Jardín and El Bollullo.
- Vineyards and traditional Canarian cuisine.
Best for
Travellers who want nature, culture and a more relaxed, authentic atmosphere.
Can you do both?
Absolutely. Tenerife is only about 80 km across, and a rental car lets you base yourself in one side and easily explore the other in day trips. Many visitors split their stay: a few days in the south for beaches, a few days in the north for nature and culture.
Our recommendation
If you want a classic, easy beach holiday, stay in the south. If you prefer hiking, local towns and a quieter, greener setting, choose the north. And if you want the full Tenerife experience, do both.
