Tenerife Travel Guide: 15 Things You Need to Know Before You Go

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. With its volcanic landscapes, black and golden beaches, lush laurel forests and the towering Mount Teide, the island offers an incredible variety of experiences in a surprisingly compact area.
If you are planning your first trip, here are the 15 things you really need to know before you go.
1. The weather is famously mild
Tenerife is known as the "island of eternal spring". Average temperatures hover between 20°C and 28°C all year round, making it a fantastic destination in any season.
2. North and South are very different
The south is drier, sunnier and packed with resorts and golden beaches. The north is greener, more humid and home to the colonial city of La Laguna and the lush Anaga mountains.
3. Mount Teide is a must
At 3,715 metres, Teide is the highest peak in Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can hike to the summit (permit required) or take the cable car for breathtaking views above the clouds.
4. Book Teide permits in advance
The cable car and the summit trail have limited daily slots. Book weeks ahead, especially in summer and around holidays.
5. Whale watching is world-class
The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins year-round. It is one of the best places in Europe for sightings.
6. Renting a car gives you freedom
Public transport is decent, but a car lets you reach hidden coves, mountain villages and the best viewpoints on your own schedule.
7. The local food is worth exploring
Try papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, fresh grilled fish, gofio and a glass of Malvasía wine.
8. The beaches are volcanic
As well as golden stretches in the south, Tenerife has striking black sand beaches formed by volcanic activity — Playa Jardín and Playa El Bollullo are highlights.
9. Anaga is magical
The Anaga Rural Park in the north preserves one of the best remaining laurisilva forests in Europe, with misty trails and dramatic viewpoints.
10. La Laguna is a UNESCO city
San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a beautifully preserved colonial town, perfect for a half-day stroll.
11. Sunscreen is essential
Even on cloudy days the UV index is high. Protect yourself, especially at altitude on Teide.
12. Tap water is safe but most locals drink bottled
It is purified but slightly mineral. Bottled water is cheap and widely available.
13. Book popular experiences early
Sunset catamaran trips, Teide stargazing and whale watching sell out, particularly in peak season.
14. Learn a few words of Spanish
English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but a simple gracias or buenos días always goes a long way.
15. Free cancellation matters
Choose experiences with flexible cancellation so you can adapt to the weather or your mood. All Tenewow bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before.
